As Canadian as Huawei?

Abstract

Huawei, a Chinese provider of mobile phone network infrastructure, software, and handsets, has had a hard time in the U.S. market. The company is viewed as being closely associated with the Chinese government, causing concerns that the Chinese government might have access to information being transmitted in networks with Huawei equipment.

In Canada, these concerns are not as frequently voiced, and Huawei networking equipment is used on many mobile phone networks nationwide. Huawei has also had success selling high-end handsets that are priced less than models from Apple and Samsung. Company officials indicate that given the current political situation, it does not make sense to spend too much effort on the U.S. market, and they are focusing on countries where they are more likely to be accepted, such as Canada.
