Abstract

Increasing prosperity has brought diet and lifestyle changes to places like rural India that are resulting in increases in chronic diseases. So Big Pharma is sponsoring visits by health-care workers to screen for problems like diabetes and hypertension. Almost 1.5 billion people in India and China live where health-care access is spotty or nonexistent. Many have never been tested for such conditions. These are the fastest growing markets for medicines and companies like Eli Lilly & Co., GlaxoSmithKline Plc., and Merck & Co. are investing for long-term positioning.
